Instructions For Using The 1040 Form

The 1040 form is the basic individual income tax return.

There are a few 1040 instructions for you to follow to make sure that you fill it out properly. It is always a good idea to have at least two copies to give you a draft to use and a chance to make mistakes without penalties. Carefully read through the entire form before writing anything down to understand the 1040 instructions for using the form. If your name and address are on a label, apply it to the form as your final step. Ensure your social security number is printed correctly. Mark your filing status. If your parents claim you as a dependent, you cannot claim an exemption for yourself. Also, you cannot exempt your spouse if their parents claim him or her as a dependent.

Always read the left margin of the 1040 instructions for using the form. The Income section includes wages, salaries, tips, interest, and dividends. Beforehand, review your W-2 forms from work and any schedules or forms that relate to the type of income you receive. The Adjusted Gross Income includes various types of deductions such as business expenses and tuition deductions. The Tax and Credits and Other Taxes sections sum all the money you owe the government. The Payments section sums all the money you've already paid to the government.

The final steps are to calculate the net amount you owe or should be refunded and attach the payment if necessary. Review all calculations and 1040 instructions for using the form before signing the form. Apply the label and make copies of everything. In the case of an audit, you will be able to more quickly resolve any problems that may arise.
